What our Nordic neighbours can teach us about sustainable eating & general wellbeing.

Anyone familiar with the Channel 4 series The World's Best Diet will know that presenters Jimmy Doherty and Kate Quilton deemed the sparsely populated island country as number one.

A whole manner of factors were considered, with the help of nutritional experts as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations.

What's their secret?

There's a few fundamentals I'm keen to explore, & it's often simpler than you think.

1) Protein Intake 🐟 - The main staples of Icelandic cuisine are centred around a high consumption of fish, lamb & dairy products (such as the minimally processed strained cheese called skyr which is very high in protein & low in sugar).

2) Fibre 🌾 - Rye bread or Rúgbrauð also comprises a large proportion of the diet. An increase in fibre intake helps aid satiety as well as maintaining a healthy gut & GI tract.

3) Omega 3 🐠 - Another huge benefit of a fish-based diet. Helps reduce inflammation as well as lowering blood pressure & reduce pain.

4) Good Quality H2O 💦 - Many swear by the supposed therapeutic properties of the many naturally occurring hot springs. Although this may be a slight over exaggeration, the family focused aspect of these pastimes as a means of de-stressing & recovering is an important component that is often neglected.

4) Activity Levels 🧗🏻‍♂️ - Naturally in such a rural environment, staying active is relative easy to come by. Rock climbing & hiking through the many fjords & glaciers are popular pastimes, as are kayaking, open-water swimming & even CrossFit.

What I love most about the Icelandic way of living is the sheer simplicity of it.

A diet built around lean protein & highly fibrous whole foods with a healthy dose of physical activity on a regular basis.

What more could you possibly need?
